What are crowns and how do you use them?
Crowns are a dental restoration we use to strengthen and protect a tooth that has suffered trauma, fracture, or decay so advanced that a filling isn't an option. A dental crown enhances the appearance of your smile and restores the strength and functionality of the damaged tooth. You may hear crowns referred to as "caps" because they surround your tooth like a little helmet.
At Pruce Dental, we offer crowns made of porcelain, zirconia, porcelain fused to metal, and gold. Most patients choose esthetic porcelain or zirconia for teeth that show when they smile. Porcelain fused to metal crowns are very strong but leave a dark line of metal showing through at the gum line so are best for teeth that don't show when you smile. Gold is not as widely used as it was decades ago but still offers advantages in certain situations.
Our goal is to help you choose conservative options that fit your oral health goals, your lifestyle, and your budget. If you think a crown may be in your future, please call Pruce Dental to arrange a convenient consultation. Dr. Pruce will evaluate your needs and help you make a decision about which type would be most beneficial in your case.
