Preventive Care

What is periodontal disease and how can I prevent getting it?

Periodontal disease (gum disease) is a bacterial infection that attacks the gums, bone, and supporting structures of a tooth. Without treatment, gum disease progresses and, in the advanced stage, may ultimately lead to tooth loss.

During the day, a sticky coating develops on your teeth. This film is called plaque, and it collects bacteria that linger on your dental enamel. If these bacteria are not removed properly with brushing and flossing, they cause inflamed, tender, or swollen gums.

Gum diseases range from a simple inflammation of the gums, which is called gingivitis, to a severe infection, called periodontitis. In this advanced stage, gum disease causes significant damage to the gums and bone that support your teeth. Without prompt and proper treatment, teeth may be lost.

The best way to avoid getting gum disease is with diligent oral hygiene and routine visits to our Washington, PA dental office for cleanings and exams. If you are keeping your teeth really clean and seeing us regularly, there’s very little chance that you will develop gum disease.

Whether it’s time for your next exam or you just want to be sure your teeth are as healthy as they can be, please call us. We will be happy to talk to you about the steps we can take to help you achieve a healthy, beautiful smile

We have always been strong advocates of a conscientious routine of preventive care. The goal at our Washington, PA dental office is to help you preserve your healthy teeth for as long as possible. Prevention is the number one way we can help you achieve that goal.

If you think about it, it makes sense that maintaining the health of your teeth is much easier than risking complicated and costly treatment in the future. You already know that brushing and flossing twice a day is essential, but it is equally important to supplement your own oral hygiene routine with regular professional dental cleanings and exams.

With regular visits, Dr. Pruce and our team can monitor your oral health over time and address problems when they are still small and easy to treat. Just because your teeth feel okay and you're not in pain, it does not necessarily mean that there are no underlying problems. Routine exams and x-rays allow us to detect conditions that you're not even aware of.

The health of your teeth is so important, and preventive care is so easy that it makes good sense to be proactive with your oral health care. Please contact Pruce Dental to arrange a convenient appointment for your cleaning and exam.
